The Art of Layering Jewelry:
How to Stack Your Necklaces and Bracelets
Layering jewelry is a timeless trend that allows you to showcase multiple pieces in a more sophisticated and elegant way, providing you with the opportunity to showcase your skills with styling but also your style. Through layering your pieces, you can create eye-catching looks, which are perfect solutions for certain outfits that call for that extra layer of wow.
Whether you are more of a dainty jewelry wearer or you prefer larger and bolder pieces, the art of layering is for all, and it’s not the easiest way to style beautiful jewelry pieces. Through personal trials and tribulations, I have been able to gather accurate information on how to tame your accessorizing game to the next layer (a corny play on words)! I hope you find some inspiration today and can apply these helpful tips for your next outfit.
Layering Necklaces
I would say this is the most important piece of jewelry that you wear because they are usually one of the first things you see on a person (unless you have your hair up). Nonetheless, it can be very easy to layer necklaces, and they look like a car wreck on your chest, but there are a few things I’ve learned to help.
Begin with a vocal point necklace, such as an Arabic name necklace, which is a piece that you want to fall and stay in the center and the perfect spot. Picking on a necklace you want to be in center stage makes the other pieces so much easier. You want to then select a necklace that is shorter and one that is longer than the vocal point piece.
Play around with specific lengths until you are happy with the way in which they fall. You can layer with 2, 3, 4, or 5 if you very much wish so, but to avoid them covering one another and creating a clunky mess, you want to ensure they are all varied in length.
Mix Metals
Don’t be afraid to experiment beyond your silver and gold collections and try to mix and match when you can. Coming in silver and gold can create an interesting visual interest and add dimension to your overall look. I have also found that mixing and matching your earrings can do the same. Have you ever been torn on which color, style, or pair of earrings to wear? I just began wearing a bit of both, and it changed my life, and now I am beginning to see large designers do this on their runways, and if they have done it, I have been doing some right all this time.
Bracelets
When it comes to layering up bracelets, it’s all about the proportions, where they fit on your arm, and the thickness of them. For example, I tend to wear only really large arm cuffs and bangles, so layering isn’t an option and doesn’t suit my short arms, but when I decide to wear my smaller bangles, I tend to just throw on everything until I’m satisfied with the volume.

Rings
I think this is the perfect way to mix metals but also incorporate some color. I find this the easiest to layer because I recently discovered you can buy middle finger rings, and what I mean by that is they find the middle finger just above the middle joint. This allows you to add an extra piece to your chunkier rings where there is no room to add a secondary. Have a play with positioning until you find a selection that coherently goes together and is comfortable.
If you want to create the perfect ring stack, you can opt for brands that specialize in making three rings that fit seamlessly into one another. If that’s not within your budget and you want to have a go with things you have, then go with rings that are relatively flat and thin and give you enough room to add others.
It’s also important that you don’t force it; if they don’t make sense together and the vibes are too different, just keep them to a different look, and you will eventually build a collection that all goes together.
Layer With Purpose
As just mentioned, you don’t want to just throw everything you have on and hope it doesn’t look forced. While layering jewelry is all about mixing and matching, you need to ensure they all fall within the same theme and complement each other. For example, a certain layer of necklaces might look good together, but when it comes to a specific outfit choice, it’s just not the vibe, so something else needs to be created. Avoid forcing jewelry with fashion, overcrowding, and overwhelming yourself with the idea of layering; not every day is a layering day.
